How to pack your bag in 30 minutes

Left it late? You won’t miss your flight with these tips.

We’ve all been there, packing in a last-minute panic! Your head is all over the place because you have to fly in a few hours and you know the plane won’t wait. In times like these it’s best to have a plan in place.

Here’s how you can pack your bag in 30 minutes so you don’t miss your flight – and just as importantly, you don’t forget anything important.

Have an essentials bag ready to go

When time is tight, the key is to be prepared. That means thinking ahead – long before you even think about travelling.

Having a pre-packed toiletries bag gives you the luxury to just grab it and go. So you have the double benefit of saving time and not forgetting your travel essentials.

Here’s what to keep pre-packed:

  • Toothbrush and toothpaste
  • Deodorant
  • Tweezers and razor
  • Painkillers and other medicines
  • Plasters and bandages
  • Worldwide plug adaptor

It’s simply a case of buying double when you go to the supermarket and keeping one in your travel bag.

Decant your liquids

Keep an empty set of mini toiletry bottles and a clear plastic bag ready to go. Then when it’s time to travel, simply squirt your shampoo, conditioner, face wash and other liquids straight into them. This will save you the annoyance of having security go through your things, and the inconvenience of having them taken off you.

It’s most useful if you’re travelling with just carry-on luggage, but also if you don’t want to be digging through your suitcase or looking for a pharmacy or supermarket when you arrive.

Make a travel list

There’s nothing worse than needing to leave for the airport but being sure you’ve forgotten something important. And so many of us do this over and over, each time we travel.

The trick to avoid it is to keep a list. A few days before you need to travel, sit down and think out everything you need. Split it into sections for simplicity. The longest section would be a core list of items that you need on every trip.

Your core list should include items like:

  • Passport
  • Tickets and visas
  • Wallet/purse
  • Phone and charger
  • Books/magazines
  • Essentials bag (make sure this is pre-packed!)
  • Underwear

Then you can add sections for different types of trip: business trip, city break, beach holiday, with relevant items for each. For example, business trips may require your laptop, whereas beach holiday you’d need to pack sun cream.

Save your list and add to it with each trip, as new items come to mind. Have it to hand each time you travel and you’ll be amazed how much faster you pack. No more standing in the middle of the room, knowing you’ve forgotten something but having no idea what it is.
