Spend 48 hours in Amman, Jordan

Our top tips for a memorable weekend away

Life moves fast. And with so many demands on our time, many people are trading the traditional two-week holidays for shorter breaks.

So to give you some inspiration for your next weekend away, we’ve put together a quick guide to one of the region’s most beautiful and dynamic cities: Amman, Jordan.

Start with a city stroll
One of the best options when you land in a new city is to take the time to explore a little, and Amman rewards explorers with a treasure trove of secrets. One of our favourite spots for a scenic view of the city is Jabal Al Lweibdeh, one of Amman’s seven hills. Once you’ve enjoyed the view, stroll among the old alleys and houses and stop for a coffee at Rumi, a café named after the famous poet whose work covers the walls.

Absorb the atmosphere on Abdali Boulevard
Known locally as the New Downtown of Amman, The Boulevard has quickly become a favourite among locals and tourists alike. Conveniently situated in the heart of Abdali, The Boulevard features upmarket stores, cafés and restaurants, as well as housing business and high-end residential space for a real mix of people and a genuine buzz. We like it best at night, when the lights of The Boulevard provide a spectacular ambience.

Browse the famous Rainbow Street
For the best Jordanian crafts in Amman, head to Rainbow Street. Start at the historic garden villa on the corner of Fawzi Malouf Street, where the Jordan River Foundation offers handwoven rugs and baskets, silver jewellery textiles and beautiful home furnishings. Nearby you can find wonderful hand-painted Armenian ceramics of Balian. Besides the antiques you’ll find bookshops, mini markets, and sprawling pavement cafés packed with locals.

Get a taste of traditional fare
In Amman you’re never short of somewhere to eat and drink. One of our favourite places to grab a bite is Hashem, on Al-Amir Mohammed St. For almost a century this no-frills restaurant has been serving hungry passersby bowls of creamy hummus and steaming foul 24 hours a day. The food is delicious and the service is fast. What’s more, it won’t put a hole in your pocket either – you can easily amble away with a full stomach for under 2 JD.

Of course, there’s a wealth of cultural treasure waiting to be discovered in Amman. We recommend going and finding a few local favourites of your own!
